Concerning the Dissolution of HLC’s Nonprofit Status

Humanists of Linn County to Hold Vote on Dissolution of Nonprofit Status

Cedar Rapids, IA — The board of the Humanists of Linn County announces that the organization will be holding a vote of the membership in late October to determine whether to dissolve its nonprofit status and transition back into a member-led group.

Current board president, Tyler Owen, previously announced that he would not be seeking reelection at the upcoming annual meeting in October. Unfortunately, no other board members have expressed interest in taking on the role. Due to this limited capacity among current board members and a general decline in member involvement since the COVID-19 pandemic, the board has reached a consensus that it can no longer sustain the organizational and administrative responsibilities required to maintain nonprofit status.

“We believe that returning the group to a more flexible, member-led organization—free from the formalities of nonprofit administration—will allow us to focus on community building and informal meetups that align with the values of our members,” said Tyler. “This change will provide a fresh opportunity for the community to determine how they wish to engage moving forward.”

The vote will take place in late October, during the annual meeting of the membership (date and time TBD). Following the vote, members will be able to decide on the future of meetups and other events, ensuring that the group can continue fostering connections within the local humanist community in a more manageable format.
